What are Synchros in a gearbox?
Modern cars use synchronizers in order to avoid the need for double-clutching. A synchronizer, or "synchro," lets the collar and gear synchronize their speeds while they're already in contact but before the dog teeth engage.
What does a bad synchronizer sound like?
With the car not moving put it in neutral and let out the clutch. You should hear a little bit of a rattling noise. Then step on the clutch and give the drivetrain a few seconds to stop spinning. The rattling should have stopped.
