Radiator Function
Radiators work to eliminate heat from the engine. The process begins when the thermostat in the front of the engine detects excess heat. Then coolant and water get released from the radiator and sent through the engine to absorb this heat.
What happens when the radiator goes bad?
As the radiator goes bad, it will turn a rusty or oil color from contaminants. If not flushed periodically, this dirty coolant turns into sludge. By the time it turns to sludge, it will not flow properly to cool the engine efficiently and you may end up with extensive damage to the engine and transmission. Low coolant.
Four Signs You have a Bad or Failing Radiator
Your vehicle is overheating. If your vehicle constantly overheats, especially under normal driving conditions, this is one of the most common signs that your radiator is bad or failing.
Your vehicle is leaking coolant. Sludge build up in your radiator.
Low coolant levels.
How do I test a radiator?
Cold EngineTest
Remove the radiator cap when the engine is cold.
Start the engine and allow it to run for three to five minutes.
Shine a flashlight in the radiator and see if any fluid is flowing. If the fluid is not moving, or if the fluid resembles brown soup, this is an indication that your radiator is blocked.
